I’ve been toying back and forth with the idea of joining Patreon since last year. It took me so long to launch my profile because I didn’t know what to offer my readers. Building a page and committing to perks is something I take seriously. But here I am. FINALLY. She is live.
What is Patreon?
Patreon is a service for creatives to get paid directly for their work from their supporters. Patreon takes 5% from each payment backing a creative. There are also small fees for supporters who use Paypal or Stripe. But for the most part, creatives are left with more than 90 percent of the payout in each transaction.
Other crowdfunding sites focus on short-term fundraisers (30 days for example). But on Patreon subscribers can support you open-endedly.
Creators can decide to set up a monthly subscription option or a pay per creation option for subscribers.
Why are you joining Patreon now?
I am looking to monetize my independent work. The media industry is going through a very interesting time right now. Therefore, I see it is in my best economic interest to build another avenue of income for my work.
Right now there is ALOT going on in the media world. Companies are being bought and sold and divided up and sold again every year. There are so many fake news producers on social media racking up stacks of money from web traffic, it is really alarming. Net neutrality is being threatened by the government, meaning the internet may not be as open and free as it is now in the future.
You as a consumer of news and content should feel a way about this. If you don’t work in these fields, do know that what you are fed ultimately determines the decisions you make and how you see the world and even yourself in the world.
With that said, it is important more than ever to support real voices contributing quality information to the space.
I love the idea that loyal readers can invest in my work directly which can lead to more freedom in how I write as opposed to being at the constant chokehold of web traffic goals and clicks.
What are you working on now?
Right now I am working on my photo essay archive featuring 100 millennials of color on my platform Hearts Converse. I am releasing one photo essay a week and with some support, I can continue doing so through the new year.
I am also working on offering more informative content about the creative, travel, and lifestyle spaces through this blog. Posts like these are essential to spreading the word about opportunities for fellow creatives and professionals out there looking to monetize their work.
One piece of content I am really passionate about creating at the moment for my blog is a guide to educating Black Americans about bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, and the blockchain technologies. I’ve been doing so much research about the space and what baffles me is that there aren’t many discussions being had within our community. It’s brand new and there is so much skepticism about it, but it’s time we give it some thought.
All in all, my goal is to always find efficient ways to create, travel and live. And if I am put on to something, I want my community to know as well.
