You have to be under a rock to not know singer Frank Ocean has released a letter on his tumblr page concerning his sexuality in response to rumors that he was “gay” or “bi-sexual.” Even though he doesn’t declare exactly which one he is, he does confirm that his first love was a man. This shouldn’t be top news because of course there are more important things happening in this crazy world that needs major exposure. Some straight people might say “Why should it matter? I don’t announce my heterosexuality.” And it shouldn’t matter. But to me it’s deeper than the ‘Oh I’m announcing my gayness/bi-sexualness guys! Parade around me now,’ sentiment that some are attaching to ‘coming out’.
Moreover, it seems that folks are thirsty for the dramatics of others, however in truth there are still young men, especially black men, struggling with accepting their sexuality because of stigmas placed on them from their families and others immediately around them. And Frank just did something heroic in a sense that he’s expressed his fears with facing who he is and now he’s finally coming to terms with it.
