Around this time of year, we’re grabbing magazines and cutting out photos and words that pop out to us to make our vision boards — or in my case — a “create box” last year. I detailed my experience making my first box on XOnecole.
Going into it, I knew that manifestation tools promise to call on the law of attraction and help us accomplish our goals.
A year later, has it worked? Was I able to manifest all the amazing things I put in my create box?
Some things have come to life: such as successfully raising the funds to take on this fellowship; landing a writing contract at the publication I’m currently working with; and traveling safely to Johannesburg, Cape Town and European cities for four months by myself without ever getting sick, lost or physically harmed.
I can see different ways in which my 2016 mood words I placed in the box — love, elevation, quality and courage — have become part of my core values. I set intentions to measure everything I put out and everything I let in by those words.
Big Lesson 1:
Here’s a reality check: Some of the things I asked for, I should not have asked for. They weren’t meant for me. I learned this the hard way and chose to accept that.
This led me to my biggest takeaway of keeping a create box this year: No matter how big the goals we place on our manifestation tools, there will still be limits to what we can conceive happening in our lives. We can’t predict anything. Things can go left real quick.
Big Lesson 2:
Also, we’re imperfect and always growing and changing. What we want at January 2017 may be different at January 2018, 2019 and so on. That doesn’t mean stop planning and manifesting. It just means be open and make room for the change happening within us.
And how do we know when something is no longer for us and to stop asking for it? It’s hard to explain. But for me, it’s when my overall peace and equilibrium is constantly thrown off.
Pay attention because taking things off our plate is more important than adding at times.
Big Lesson 3:
Another confession: I did not review the items in my box everyday or even every week. But I don’t think it mattered as much as I thought it would. I realized there is another major key to this whole thing.
I can manifest all I want; open the box and stare and stare at the photos and words, but I still need to take action. One thing that I did to improve my productivity this year was to be more organized. My entire life is planned out on calendars and spreadsheets and checked daily on Google Docs. Instead of trying to plan every workout, I just let my Nike training app plan them for me. Love technology for this reason!
Also when I’d get the inkling to do small updates to my blog, resume or to reach out to an individual for a check-in, instead of procrastinating, I’d trust that these feelings were signs to stay prepared for greater opportunities coming. I’d take the 10 to 15 minutes I would spend scrolling my social timeline and just do it.
The truth is that manifestation tools alone can’t bring us to where we want to be. It can plant the seed, but the dream still needs to be nurtured and protected in proper environments. There will still be some growing pains and grueling sacrifices on the way. Sometimes we will be shocked by beautiful surprises as well.
Still, vision boards and create boxes are a powerful way to stay focused and to not get distracted from situations that can take us off our path. For that reason I’m going to keep using them.
I hope 2017 is your greatest year yet and if you have any thoughts on manifestation tools, leave me a note below.
