The only thing pulling me away from Johannesburg at this point is the fact that I’ve already spent hundreds booking flights to other countries. It feels like home. Johannesburg’s energy has adopted me. I’ve done so much and I’m ready to share, but it’s only right to introduce you all to some of the things happening in my neighborhood first.
Walking along Main street in Maboneng on a Sunday morning and early afternoon you will see a dozen street vendors selling African-printed jewelry, clothing and accessories. Men on the opposite side of the street beat traditional African drums. It is the most lively day of the week in the neighborhood. And a couple of feet past the outdoor vendors is Arts on Main, an indoor and outdoor facility that houses Canteen, a dope restaurant with an amazing patio. There is also a building which serves as a multi-purpose space. During the week you will find shops and art galleries. On Sunday, it transforms into a market with diverse offerings in food and fare all reflective on Johannesburg’s many cultures.
Earlier this week, I walked over to Arts on Main and was met with the sounds of salsa and dozens of beautiful people eating and enjoying the 85-degree weather. Afterwards, I checked out Poolside, a chill outdoor bar and lounge surrounding a pool behind the Museum of African Design. There TSTKMRS Africa was having a pop-up event. I was met by the smiling founder Cherae Robinson and chatted it up with new faces, while sipping on a mojito and catching the beaming sun-rays. I came alone knowing no one, but left giving hugs to new friends. Take a look at some shots I took and my snapchat story from that day at the bottom.
