2 Chainz proved to be the king of shameless self-promotion Saturday (Sept. 1) as he landed onstage at the Rock the Bells festival held at PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey with his debut LP, Based on a T.R.U. Story, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
First up, as his DJ played out the summer banger “Mercy,” Deuce entered the stage rhyming to his verse. He wore a military camouflage vest with an American flag sewn on its back, a white T-shirt, white jeans and red kicks while performing a range of songs from his album and mixtapes.
Five members of his crew stood behind him flaunting T-shirts emblazoned with the word “B.O.A.T.S.” an acronym for his current opus.
During the show, 2 Chainz instructed his fans to put their fists in the air. “Do your arm like this,” he shouted while bending his arms. “Now hold it. Now let’s turn up!” “Turn Up” from his T.R.U. REALigion mixtape followed. He also rapped other tracks from the project including “Undastatement.”
The Atlanta native continued with other songs he’s featured on including Nicki Minaj‘s “Beez in the Trap,” and had the ladies in the audience help with her verses. He also rhymed his part on Juicy J‘s “Bands a Make Her Dance,” in which he is featured on the remix.
“You got anybody out here tryna be a millionaire before they leave this fuckin’ earth?” the rappers asked the crowd. “I’m looking for more female millionaires.”
The ladies gave a warm response but not without him playing them in the end. “Good,” he stated. “‘Cause I’m tired of buying your asses cars.”
The comical conversations and his personalized two-step and cooking dance were ever-present. He also repeatedly dropped his infamous catchphrase “Truuu!” and “Turn up!” in between every song. 2 Chainz covered much ground as he performed songs from his Based on a T.R.U. Story, including “Crack,” “Birthday Song” and “I’m Different.”
Before leaving, he continued taking advantage of his current shining moment by promoting his album.
“I want everyone to look at the person next to you,” he said. “Look at the person next to you and say, ‘Go pick up a B.O.A.T.'”
